Amusing is when they’re holding press conferences to tell people they did it *before* anyone digs up dirt and finds out they did. Nip it in the bud.
Though an interesting point someone did bring up was that we’re judging past instances on today’s societal standards. Was it wrong to do? Certainly. Is it racist? Of course. But back then it wasn’t considered as wrong or taboo. Not necessarily defending their actions just a different take on it.
Though going forward we’re going to see a lot more past social media documented f-up’s thanks to Myspace and Facebook. Probably less racist and more so "here's senator SoAndSo being a hoe with the dog Snapchat filter on"

Uh, people in the 80s sure as shit knew blackface was wrong. They just did it anyway. Maybe they were naive or didn’t realize HOW wrong it was, but it was not generally acceptable behavior, even then. Read up on Ben Vereen’s performance at Reagan’s inauguration. He tried to do a blackface performance as a commentary on the history of it, but the second part of his performance with the commentary part got cut from the broadcast and only his blackface bit was shown. No matter how much he tried to explain, he was roasted in the court of public opinion.

Yes, all of that. And more. And none of this applies to the POTUS, who is no doubt dancing a jig during his Executive Time.

That sounds like an idea from the Department of Bad Ideas, or the Department of How Could This End Badly?

I mean, I get what he was *trying* to do, but even if the second part of his performance was broadcast, there’s no guarantee the general public would’ve understood. That said , ABC hung him out to dry BAD by cutting the second half of his act, after they had reassured him it would be shown in its entirety.

I spent most of my youth living in Virginia. I cringe to think of some things I uttered in those days as a teenager. One word, which has “N” as its first letter, I can remember the last time I ever uttered it. I was in the Army in Louisiana
and I was driving my car crammed full of other soldiers to the morning formation at the motor pool where we all worked as mechanics. This would have been around 1985. I am ashamed to say that after I uttered the word, I remembered that one of the soldiers in the backseat was black. I felt ashamed then and I do now, though
I can honestly say that this would _
not_
happen today. If I could meet that man now, even today, I would embrace him and apologize to him for my utterance that day 35 years ago
. Serving in the Army, having black roommates, was a very good way to get to know other humans.
There are degrees of this sort of thing, it seems to me. There are no pictures of me, nor have I ever worn, nor would I ever have considered wearing, black face. “It’s how people rolled” adds to a longer conversation, but is no excuse. These politicians are receiving the wages not only of their (long) past
behavior, but also for their chosen profession. I don’t know what to tell them, nor do I have much sympathy for them.

I’m honestly surprised this is only applying to Virginia and not every southern state.

I’m not down playing the current environment. I think black racing is atrocious and never would have thought to do this. But to be honest who knows what will be considered offensive 30 years from now.

I’m pretty sure we had a segment on blackface in social studies in elementary school in Virginia in the 80s. But I guess if you were affluent enough, it was less wrong back then (sarcasm, of course).
